The men of darkness strike again

In the report ”Artificial UV Radiation and Skin Cancer” from The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) state solarium tanning in young ages increase the risk for skin cancer later in life.

An international research team dismiss the state above as false and misleading. And they have the support in an EU-financed study which did not find any relation between solarium tanning and skin cancer.

IARC:s report say ”the use of solarium before the age of 35 increase the risk of getting skin cancer (malignant melanoma) with 75%”.The organisation Sunlight Research Forum (SRF) had a couple of international well-known researchers watch closer at the study.  After their review SRF dismiss the study as spurious.
According to one of the researchers, Dr Frank de Gruilj by the Institution for Dermatology at the centre for medicine by Leidens University in Holland, you can not decide if skin cancer depends on sun outdoor or sun indoor.
Other researchers uphold that negative sun advice increase the risk for more cases of cancer, because the sun is our most important source to D-vitamin, which is the most important protection against cancer in general. And the solarium is just as good as the “natural” sun to make D-vitamin. (See related releases.)

No relation between solarium and skin cancer
Ad Brand, at SRF, says that IARC completely left out an important European study. Some short facts from the study that IARC ignored:
·         The study were financed by EU and where carried out by Luxembourg Health Institute.
·         The study concern solarium tanning and the risk to develop melanoma at the age of 18-49.
·         The study treated 622 cases of melanoma and the patient’s exposure in solarium and in natural sun.
·         In the control group 649 people from six European countries took part.
·         The level concerning tan was higher than in any earlier study in the same subject.
·         No relation between melanoma and solarium was found.
·         No relation between spent time in the solarium and the risk to develop melanoma was found, regardless the time that was spent in the solarium.
·         No relation between solarium tanning before the age of 19 and melanoma later in life was found.
·         No relation between high use of solarium and melanoma was found
